Combining logs and coal
You probably think of firewood logs and coal as completely separate fuels. However, it is possible to burn them together. That’s right: you can burn coal and logs in your fireplace simultaneously. But why might you opt to combine these two fuels?
The best of both worlds
Burning coal and wood simultaneously allows you to get the best of both worlds. Coal lasts longer and produces more heat than logs, but logs have a more pleasant aroma and look far better in your wood burner. By using the two fuels together, you ensure that your fire burns for a long time at a hot temperature (thanks to the coal), but produces the same pleasantly woody aroma of a log fire. What’s more, the overall cost of the fire will be cheaper than a pure-coal fire.
Use dry logs and smokeless coal
Of course, if you intend to use coals and logs together, you need to be careful. Combining logs with coal can cause problems if it isn’t done correctly. You need to be aware of the potential issues so that you can avoid them. Firstly, it’s important to note that not all fireplaces and stoves are designed to accept more than one type of fuel. Putting the wrong type of fuel in a fireplace or similar fuel-burning device that isn’t designed to handle it can cause damage. Coal burns far hotter than coal. Burning coal in your brand new (and no doubt expensive woodburner) will crack the grate (it will also invalidate your warranty). Make sure that yours can cope with multiple fuel-types before you use it to combine coal and logs.
Secondly, you should be aware that not all types of logs and coal can be used together. Ideally, you should only use very dry logs (such as kiln-dried logs) and smokeless coal (such as anthracite). This helps to minimise the amount of smoke and ensure that the fire doesn’t emit any noxious fumes, which can be a problem if you use very impure coal or logs with excessively high moisture levels. Indeed, just about all multi-fuel stoves recommend burning approved smokeless fuel. Coal is definitely not an approved smokeless fuel.
