What are chicken wood chips?
Chicken wood chips are wood that has been chipped down to approximately 4mm to 39mm chips, that is used as a floor covering in chicken runs. We used UK sourced hardwood to make our chicken chips. Any wood that is twisty and bent that cannot be used as firewood is ‘recycled’ through our Heizohack chipper which produces a consistent small chip perfect for chicken friendly areas.
What are chicken chips be used for?
Our wood chips for chickens are not only perfect for all types of chicken runs, but paths and yards too. They absorb more moisture than other chicken run floor coverings and being hardwood they don’t break down easily. They help to control weeds and pests, reduce smells, as well as conserve water and prevent soil erosion by stopping your chickens getting to the roots of grass they love so much, so it won’t grow again. – say goodbye to your garden being a muddy mess. We recommend that you don’t use our chicken wood chips in a coop though – they are designed only for external use within a chicken run.
Why use hardwood chicken chips instead of softwood?
Softwood breaks down much quicker than hardwood. Softwood chips are often wet to start with so cannot take on board additional moisture. This speeds up the process of composting the wood chip into the ground and the ground can quickly become muddy again. This means additional expense of replacing the wood chips more regularly. Kiln dried hardwood chips are ‘dried’ in a kiln for approximately seven days at between 70 and 80 degrees, not only does this remove the moisture in the wood so they are even drier underfoot but also helps remove the risk of infection spores like mould or bacteria turning into fungus over time that could be harmful to your chickens.
How long do chicken chips last?
It does depend on the usage, but approximately a layer of 4-5” of hardwood kiln dried chicken chips should last a full winter season of 6 months. To keep the run fresh and clean we recommend you turn the chippings over once a month, topped up at any time in the season if needed.
How to dispose of used chicken wood chips
Disposing of your used chicken run wood chips is simple. Just rake the mulch up after each season, it will naturally break down over time and can used around the garden as an excellent garden mulch to fertilize the ground and act as a weed suppressant.
