Crated Kiln Dried Hardwood Logs FAQ's

What are Crated kiln-dried hardwood logs?

Crated kiln dried hardwood logs are premium-quality firewood that has been dried in a kiln to reduce moisture content (typically lower than 20%). This process ensures the logs burn more efficiently, produce less smoke, and generate more heat, making them ideal for wood burners and wood-burning stoves. These kiln dried logs are then hand-stacked in wooden crates which maximises the space - less gaps = more wood for you to burn.

How big are the crates?

Our crates of kiln dried hardwood logs come in two sizes:

  • 1 cubic meter which equates to 1.6 cubic meters of loose logs
  • 1.2 cubic meters which equates to 2 cubic meters of loose logs

Why should I choose kiln dried hardwood logs over softwood or unseasoned firewood?

Kiln dried logs have a much lower moisture content (typically below 20%) compared to unseasoned or green firewood. This means they ignite easily, burn hotter, and produce less creosote buildup in your wood-burning stove or chimney. They’re also ideal for reducing smoke and emissions, making them an eco-friendly choice.

What are the benefits of buying crated kiln dried hardwood logs?

  • Convenience: Crated logs are neatly stacked, making storage easier.
  • Consistency: Every log is uniformly dried and ready to use.
  • Value: Crates often provide better value for money compared to smaller bags of firewood thanks to the way they are packed.
  • Space-saving: Crates help you maximize storage space while keeping your fire wood organized.
  • More Sustainable option: Thanks to the way the logs are packed and the shape of the crates, all available space is utilised when being transported therefore reducing carbon emissions during transport.

Are kiln dried hardwood logs suitable for all wood burners and stoves?

Yes, kiln dried hardwood logs are perfect for all types of wood burners and wood-burning stoves. Their low moisture content ensures optimal combustion, protecting your stove from excessive soot and residue buildup.

How do I store crated kiln dried hardwood logs?

Store your crated firewood in a dry, well-ventilated area, preferably under cover to protect it from rain or snow. Ideally they should be kept in a specially designed wooden log store, these help keep the logs dry while allowing a good amount of air to circulate with the added benefit of looking good in your garden. While kiln-dried logs are resistant to moisture, keeping them dry ensures they stay in perfect burning condition.

What types of hardwood are used in kiln dried logs?

Here at Logs Direct you can choose from a range of hardwoods including ash, alder, birch, hornbeam and eucalyptus. These woods are dense and provide long-lasting, high-heat burns, making them ideal for wood-burning stoves and wood burners.

How much heat do kiln dried hardwood logs produce?

Kiln dried hardwood logs produce significantly more heat than wet or unseasoned firewood. The low moisture content ensures efficient burning, making them an excellent choice for heating your home.

Are kiln dried hardwood logs environmentally friendly?

Yes, kiln dried logs are eco-friendly. They burn more efficiently, reducing smoke and harmful emissions. Choosing sustainably sourced firewood ensures you’re supporting responsible forestry practices.

Can I use kiln dried logs for outdoor fire pits or open fires?

Absolutely! Kiln dried hardwood logs are versatile and can be used in outdoor fire pits, open fireplaces, and even pizza ovens. Their clean burn ensures minimal smoke and maximum enjoyment. Nothing beats a roaring fire when enjoying a late summers evening or whilst camping, just make sure your fire is safe and controlled and is lit in a properly designed or designated fire place.
